Republican Governor Charlie Crist and the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature appear to be gearing up for a fight. Crist is hinting he has concerns about a budget that lawmakers will vote on Friday and continues to flirt with an Independent run for U.S. Senator. James Call reports Crist has scheduled an announcement for Thursday in St. Petersburg.

Oil Spill Ignites Protest

No oil appeared to be leaking  Friday after a drilling rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, the Coast Guard said. Officials are trying to contain what spilled from the blast and prevent any threat to the coast’s wildlife and plants.  A  crude oil slick 40 miles wide and 80 miles long is sitting atop deep water in the Gulf.  The Coast Guard said it is about 50 miles south of Louisianna and headed east. Environmentalists say if it comes ashore it will be a disaster.

James Call reports one Tallahassean’s response to the oil spill was to stage a one-man folk singer protest in support of a ban prohibiting oil and gas drilling off of Florida’s coast.

James Call reports Alexander Snitker of Springfield is a Glen Beck fan and said his political ambitions are inspired by Texas Congressman Ron Paul.  Snitker has filed the paperwork to be a candidate for United States Senator.

Governor Charlie Crist said he will announce Thursday whether to run for the U.S. Senate without any party affiliation. While Crist’s deliberation has leaders of the Republican Party stewing, think of a husband telling a wife he’s thinking of divorce, James Call reports Crist’s flirtations with an independent run has delighted political analysts and has some voters soul searching.

TALLAHASSEE, FL (wfsu) – The Senate passed a gambling compact 29-9 and sent it to the House for final ratification. James Call reports that leaves two more steps before Seminole gambling becomes legal.

Too Hard? Then Call Iowa!

Tallahassee, FL (2010-04-13) A Florida Senate committee on Monday continued adding into the public record reasons why two proposed constitutional amendments are unworkable. Voters will decide the fate of Fair Districts’ proposed amendments 5 and 6. They would set new guidelines in drawing state house and congressional seats. James Call reports one powerful lawmaker says they will make the once in a decade task of redistricting more difficult than it needs to be.
